Millions of Stanley cups are being recalled nationwide over a burn hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Thursday. Stanley voluntarily recalled 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs after receiving 91 reports of a lid malfunction. The mug's lid threads—the lines at the top of the cup that allow the lid to screw on—can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to fall off during use. This defect has caused 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two in the U.S. Eleven of those burns required medical attention. The recalled mugs were sold in a variety of sizes and colors—including white, black, and green—with lids made of polypropylene, a common thermoplastic. The cups were sold online and in Walmart, Target, Amazon, and other stores across the country from June 2016 through December 2024. If you have one of the recalled Stanley cups, the CPSC says to stop using it immediately and contact the company for a replacement lid.
