Boar's Head is recalling an additional 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products that may be linked to an ongoing Listeria outbreak, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Wednesday. Initially, Boar's Head recalled more than 200,000 pounds of meat sliced at delis after a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a type of bacteria that can cause listeriosis or a Listeria infection. The expanded recall includes 71 different products produced between May 10, 2024 and July 29, 2024 under the Boar's Head and Old Country brand names. The recalled products were intended for slicing at retail delis, but were also sold as packaged meats and poultry products in some locations. All products have "sell-by" dates ranging from July 29, 2024 through October 17, 2024, and were sold at retail locations nationwide. Some products were also exported to the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama. The products also have the the establishment numbers EST. 12612 or P-12612 inside the USDA mark of inspection the product labels. Though the products have been recalled, authorities are still trying to determine whether Boar’s Head products have caused the current outbreak that has so far sickened 34 people, 33 of whom were hospitalized. Two have died. The infected people said they had eaten deli meat sliced at grocery stores. Illnesses have been reported in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. What to Do If You Have Recalled Boar’s Head Products In Your Home The FSIS statement said it’s possible that some of the recalled products are still in stores as well as people’s homes. The agency is urging the public not to consume anything that has been recalled. If you have recalled products in your home, you should throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them. You should thoroughly clean your refrigerator or any other spaces that came into contact with the recalled product. Listeria causes about 260 deaths annually, and the infection is especially dangerous for people who are pregnant, 65 and older, or immunocompromised.
